Keeping People Connected and Engaged: Rethinking Talent Retention and Development

If there’s one theme that’s come up in almost every conversation lately, it’s this: How do we keep our people engaged, inspired and nurtured?

We all know how much effort goes into finding great talent – the interviews, the assessments, the discussions around fit and potential. But what happens after that? Once the excitement fades, how do we make sure people still feel connected to us, even when there’s no immediate role or opportunity?

At JP we believe that assessments should be more than data points or reports. They are powerful moments for connection. This is a chance to really see someone and give them feedback that stays with them long after the session ends. This is why we put so much emphasis on feedback and development conversations.

Even when someone isn’t the final choice for a role, we invest time in helping them understand their results, reflect on their strengths, and identify small, realistic shifts they can start making right away. Assessments are not just about helping a business choose. They’re also about helping people grow. When people feel seen, supported and developed, they stay engaged. They stay open. They speak positively about your organisation. They remain part of your broader network of potential.

This past year, we’ve seen a growing focus on succession at senior levels, which is encouraging. But the real magic happens when development becomes part of the everyday, not just a leadership agenda. When every person in the business, regardless of level or title, knows there’s space to grow, learn and be guided, that’s when engagement really takes root. Keeping people inspired and engaged isn’t about grand gestures or expensive courses. It’s about the consistent message:

“We see you. We value you. And we want you to keep growing.”

That’s the heartbeat of sustainable talent. It’s also what inspired us to create our Growth Map.

This is a simple, personal tool to help individuals take practical next steps based on their exact assessment results.

In closing, keeping people engaged and inspired has less to do with process and more to do with presence, and being intentional about how we see, support and grow others.
